A Little Bit of Everything!

Today started out with a bang as, following another long yet informative bus ride, we arrived at the famous site of Aphrodite’s Rock. Stepping out of the bus and looking over towards the water to see the rock in all its glory was one of the highlights of my day. We walked down to get a closer look of the rock in which many pictures were taken, however that was also when I was able to imagine what it would have been like for Aphrodite as she emerged from the foam of the sea. After seeing one of the more famous things on the island, we visited the Tomb of the Kings. This was very interesting to me as we got to see some of the open tombs, as well as the architecture surrounding them. This included these massive, yet beautifully sculpted pillars. The tombs themselves were quite deep, although not quite as deep so that one could not get in and get out, and were very long. It creeped me out seeing them up close, and made me feel uneasy thinking about those who had to rest there. After looking at the tombs, we visited the Paphos Harbor where I enjoyed a delicious ham and cheese baguette for lunch, followed by a windy 30 minute walk alongside the harbor. Even though the breeze was strong, it was the perfect addition to a hot day here in Cyprus. After our lunch break, we then went to see some extremely old, yet beautifully preserved and intact mosaics. These mosaics told numerous different stories, ranging from monsters with dogs to betrayal between a mother and her step son. The mosaics display a type of artistry which leaves me speechless every time I come across it. How is it possible that people back then, with the very limited materials they had, construct such a beautiful representation of a story? Following the mosaics, we then went back out near the harbor in which we had some tasty gelato, and played card games. This day was the perfect day to get outside, explore, eat, and learn about some of the ancient history that consumes this country.
