Hi! I’m Aleks Fiedler, a Pittsburgh native and a First-Year student in the Swanson School of Engineering studying Chemical Engineering. I also will be working towards a minor in Materials Science Engineering and the sustainability certificate during my time at Pitt. While at Pitt so far, I’ve joined the Engineers without borders chapter, Pitt AIChE, and attend Ballet club master classes when I find the time.
Outside of my academic pursuits I’m well known to enjoy many types of fiber arts. I always have a couple projects I work on at a time, including some recent sewing and crocheting. A new pursuit for me has been teaching myself how to make bobbin lace, which has included some woodworking over school breaks to make enough bobbins for larger projects. I also work part time at Waffellonia in Squirrel Hill.
I selected the Netherlands trip as my top choice because of the sustainability focus of the course and opportunities. I am extremely passionate about making sure I can contribute towards building a sustainable world that we can all enjoy. The site visits are an exciting opportunity so see how companies are able to function, and contribute to a sustainable world, especially within a different culture than I’m used to. While on the trip I’m excited to go to so many museums and learn more about the culture of The Netherlands!
