Day 1 – Taken to the 1st 2nd 3rd Floor

Today we got a tour of the UNIC Athens building by their CEO Antonis Polemitis, and not only learned about their current research plans but also the features of their building. They had acquired the building, which had previously been a data center, and converted it into a college campus and area for research. From this tour, I have a new perspective on planning for the needs of others. In the UNIC building, they had multiple ventilation systems to keep CO2 at a minimum in their classrooms, multiple additions to floors and windows so they could keep rooms quiet from outside noise, multiple small LED lights making up the lights so they could prevent eyestrain in classrooms, and a 300 megawatt diesel backup generator in case of emergency. They even had fire and carbon monoxide detectors in the garage that would turn on massive fans to evacuate the air in case of carbon monoxide and gates that come down in case of a fire. When designing this building, they had to have insight into what could make students’ lives easier, but also what they could do to keep them safe. The engineers in charge of designing had to think about what issues the students might face and find affordable solutions for these problems. In my future career, I want to be an engineer who has this deep level of thought, insight, and planning in their projects, so that people can have all their needs met and be as safe as possible.
