Meeting the Locals: Day 1 Amsterdam

on

Today, we toured around the city more, completing a scavenger hunt and visiting House of Denim, a jean manufacturer. During the scavenger hunt and the places, we visited after we explored a good junk of the city and even stopped in the Rijksmuseum for a bit. We also ate lunch with a friendly local dog while sitting on a canal dock. After the House of Denim, we ate at a local Surinamese restaurant and then took the metro back to the hotel.

One cultural thing I learned today is that Dutch people are very clean in public. The city streets are relatively clear of trash, and most people clean up after each themselves. Today was also Dutch Remembrance Day so we participated in the 2 minutes of silence at 8pm to recognize those who gave their lives for the Netherlands.

It was very interesting to see how the House of Denim reduces the waste involved with making jeans. Using innovative techniques like the recycled pumice rocks to bleach the jeans and laser to imprint the jeans they can cut down on water usage. Using techniques like this in other textiles industries can greatly reduce water waste, which is very high, especially for clothing like jeans.
