Costa Rica’s environmental sustainability initiatives make the country unique from other places that I’ve experienced or heard of. The focus on sustainability indicates that Costa Rica is progressive. It also makes me imagine that every decision leaders make is intentional and deliberately working toward this mission.

There are many different initiatives that Costa Rica employs to maintain its status as a global leader of sustainability. One of them is their operation on almost 100% of renewable electricity, using hydroelectric, wind, geothermal, and solar power. Another initiative is the protection of the country’s biodiversity with 30% of its territory being conserved in national parks and reserves. Additionally, Costa Rica has a program that offers payment to landowners for the protection and restoration of rainforests. All of these methods as well as other eco-friendly initiatives contribute to the country’s goal of complete of sustainability.

While researching Costa Rica’s sustainability, I also came across how their agriculture (like coffee, pineapple, and bananas) plays a big part in their initiatives. This makes me excited to tour the different farms and agricultural businesses to learn their processes. I’m also excited to visit Costa Rica because I’ll get to experience the natural beauty of diverse landscapes and the “pure vida” lifestyle!
