Beyond Athens

on

On our long bus ride to Napfi we drove far from Athens through the Greek countryside. Our guide explained the significance of these unassuming landscapes, with us driving past important landmarks such as historic Greek battlegrounds, the Walls of the Cyclops, and the Acrocorinth. Once we got to Napfi, we had a guided tour, learning about local religion and important events such as the assassination of Ioannis Kapodistrias.

After our guided tour of the city, a group of four of us climbed the over 800 stairs of the Fortress of the Palamidi Fortress to see some beautiful views of the city and sea. At the end of the day, we visited the Theatre of Epidaurus. While observing the structure, our tour guide explained that the theatre was able to project the voices of the performers without any type of microphones.

I’m really glad that he explained this aspect of the theatre and how it relates to engineering because it shows why engineers must be strong in their desired field of study while also understanding the arts. As I continue my studies, I plan to keep learning more about the arts I’m involved in, such as playing my instrument, so I can better understand the engineering principles behind them.
